Three years ago, I drove my Jeep into my garage, and until March, 2026, it didn’t roll under its own power again. Even this article is taking too long. I originally started it in February of 2026, and today is May 24th.
As I dive deeper into my project Jeep, I often find myself questioning, “Why is this taking so long?” It’s a question many gearheads ask when embarking on similar journeys. The truth is, there are a few significant factors that can slow us down, and I’m here to share my experiences.
Parts Delays: A Common Hurdle
One of the major reasons my Jeep build had been so delayed is parts availability. It’s frustrating, but it’s a reality many of us face. I spent more than a year waiting on a combination of axles and a transfer case. Not only is availability a problem, but so is money to buy the parts. Things are not getting less expensive over time. Some of the delays are self-inflicted, with indecision and design changes that required different parts, adding even more delays to deliveries.
Time Management and Priorities
Aside from parts delays, finding time to work on the Jeep can also be a challenge. Between work commitments, family obligations, and everyday life, I often realize that I have to prioritize my time differently. As much as I want to dedicate countless weekends to this project, life sometimes gets in the way. Recognizing and managing priorities helps keep the passion alive without feeling overwhelmed.
Work has been the biggest time loss driver in my life. Post-work-from-home expectations are insane. Companies want the same access they had to us when we worked from home, but expect us in the office 5-days per week. No extra compensation, just a misguided ownership of our personal lives.
Current progress
The Jeep is finally back on its own wheels and driveable. About three weeks ago I sent it to America’s Most Wanted 4×4 in Michigan for the next steps in the build. Adding another month to an already long build isn’t my favorite, but getting an upgrade done like swapping in a V8 is worth it.
In conclusion, while the journey may be longer than expected, the anticipation builds and makes each step worthwhile. If you’re in a similar boat, hang in there! With some patience and perseverance, we’ll both get to enjoy our beautiful projects before we know it.
