Jeep has created a small, diesel, convertible pickup that looks tailor made to send brand loyalists into a frenzy. Not in a good way. Think Shelby Dakota kind of frenzy.Unlike the original XJ Cherokee based MJ truck, the new Jeep Comanche is a Renegade (car) subcompact SUV that they chopped the top and stretched the wheelbase six inches to create a usable five foot long pickup bed.
Its soft top design looks like one from the WWII era Willys MB, which sounds nice but well… looks not so nice. Talk about having an overhang to catch the wind. An all wheel drive train mated to the Renegade 9-speed automatic transmission and a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine (Thanks and Praise!) from their Euro spec Renegade provide traction and forward momentum.
A bed-mounted spare tire, rock rails, steel bumpers, winch and two-inch lift help add to the overall look of the little Jeep truck.
Thankfully the Comanche is merely one of the dream (nightmare?) machines Jeep built for this year’s annual Easter Jeep Safari festival in Moab, Utah. Hopefully they will hear the collective WTF? and make the Wrangler based truck people really want.
