Ford’s latest version of their most iconic SUV gets a 2.3 Ecoboost from the Mustang and active aero for reduced drag.
Ford has sold 7 million Explorers since the SUV’s introduction in 1991, and intends to continue to sell sell sell with the 2016 version that’s being built in Chicago, Venezuela and Russia to satisfy the demand of their global market.
Going on sale next summer, the new Explorer features a bunch of new gadgets. Wide-angle cameras with washers at the front and at the rear of the vehicle. Active park assist (handy for those that can;t park themselves), numerous USB ports and a 500-watt audio system from Sony in the Explorer Platinum.
The hands-free lift gate is activated by a kick below the center of the rear bumper. Uhh, sweet I think.
Active grill shutters, which close the upper and lower fascia openings to reduce drag at speed. These also allow for larger front end openings to cool the engine. The Explorer has air curtains around the wheels to help minimize drag.
The car is stiffer thanks to a tower brace, with the four-wheel drive Explorer being three millimeters thicker to keep it in control on rugged terrain. The ever present 20 inch wheels make their debut replacing the outgoing sensible 18 inchers.
Ford changed the door seals and used engine subframe mounts to reduce vibration, with the exhaust system also adjusted for the 2.3-liter EcoBoost. Acoustic glass is used on the windshield and front doors for the XLT and higher trim levels.
LED lighting all around completes the updated exterior.
Like all Ford trucks there are a dizzying array of trim levels with the top being the Platinum, 20 inch wheels, quilted interior, wood trim, and chrome.
